چکیده

Bismuth is a heavy metal and was regarded until recently to be the heaviest stable element. It was discovered around ten years ago that the only natural isotope of bismuth, 209Bi, is an alpha emitter with a halflife of 1.9 x 1019 years [1]. Due to the low stability in aqueous solutions of bismuth derivatives with the oxidation number +V, bismuth with the oxidation number +III is regarded as the only relevant bismuth species in biological systems [2]. Bismuth is seen as the least toxic heavy metal for humans and is widely used in medical applications for its good antibacterial properties [3]. Bismuth-containing pharmaceuticals are most commonly used in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori, the causative agent for diseases like gastritis, peptic ulcer and even gastric cancer [4]. Recent evidence of bismuth methylation by human gut microbiota, resulting in more mobile and presumably more harmful derivatives, has led to new efforts to evaluate the usage of bismuth under this newfound aspect [5]. This minireview presents our current knowledge of the rare element bismuth, in particular its use in medicine, and highlights the potential health risk associated with its application.

Assessing the image quality and eye lens dose reduction using bismuth shielding in computed tomography of brain

Background: Epidemiological studies show that computed tomography (CT) is one of the main sources of ionizing radiations. Shielding of radiosensitive organs is one of the dose reduction methods. This study aimed to assess the eye lens dose reduction and image quality resulting from the use of radio-protective bismuth shield in brain CT imaging. Methods: Bismut...

Biochemical Markers of Acute and Chronic Ethanol Use: Forensic and Clinical Applications

Background: The analysis of ethanol in bio-samples is an important method for determination of acute alcohol use/abuse both in clinical and forensic toxicology. In forensic cases, it is known that micro-organisms involved in the postmortem putrefaction process can produce alcohol and when the body has been traumatized. In clinical setting, post-ingestion time has a critical role for determinati...

Planned Versus Unplanned Extubation in Opioid Overdose Patients: Does it have any effect on the prognosis? A cohort study

Background: Tracheal intubation is a life-saving measure in patients poisoned acutely with opioid, and when naloxone treatment is inadequate. This study determined the risk factors for early unplanned extubation in these patients and evaluated the effects on the clinical outcomes. Methods: At a poisoning center in Tehran, Iran, 165 opioid overdose patients who were admitted to the intensive ca...
